The story of Guru Remedies starts in the early 19th century in Tinnevelly, a small village in south India. Here, Nullamuthu Visuvasam was a catechist and an eminent Indian physician, trained in both western medicine and ancient Indian ayurvedic techniques. In his explorations of healing and prayer, Visuvasam encountered Sanyasis (ascetics) who favored him with certain rare recipes and formulations. With a knowledge grounded in these eclectic sources, Visuvasam began to experiment and create the first of many remedies that he used to help people in the very infancy of modern medicine. These formulations he passed down to his grandson Dr. Samuel Mathuram and he, in turn to his son, Dr. A. Mathuram, the sole proprietor of Guru Medical Hall. Arun Mathuram the great grandson of the legendary Dr. A. Mathuram started GuruRemedies.com in 2005 to follow in the footsteps of his ancestors and keep alive a family legacy of reaching, healing, caring, and giving

Not much more is known about Nullamuthu Visuvasam, the information we have today has been gleaned from writings of visiting Englishmen and local lore. But we do know that his grandson, Dr. Samuel Mathuram, was born in 1849 in a little town in South India called Nazareth. He too was a successful and well loved physician. The family tradition continued in Dr. A. Mathuram who was educated in ayurvedic, homeopathic, and allopathic medicine and practiced as a missionary physician alongside his father.

After several years, Dr. A. Mathuram, along with his wife and three young children, moved to Thiruchirapalli, a center for learning and education, and set-up Guru Medical Hall. At a time when many doctors were abandoning traditional medicines derived from plants in favor of Western medicine, Dr. A. Mathuram following his grandfather’s wisdom continued to integrate ancient Indian ayurvedic remedies, European homeopathic remedies and modern medicines.

The Mathurams were a family of devout Christians and prayer played an important role in their work and life. According to family stories, Dr. A. Mathuram would disappear into a room for hours of deep communion with God. In recipes, handwritten by his son, the word pray would be interspersed between precise directions for blending the ingredients. The Mathuram family not only provided patients with excellent medical care, but made lasting contributions to society. Schools and hospitals built by the Mathurams are still in use today in South India. Dr. A. Mathuram's handwritten original formulations were passed on through the family, from one generation to the next. Arun Mathuram, founder of Guru Remedies, who inherited Dr. A. Mathuram's original formulations, plans to introduce Guru Remedies’ products one at time, meticulously ensuring complete compliance with the original formulations. It is his deepest desire to provide the public with natural wellness products of the highest quality and keep alive a family legacy of reaching, caring, and giving.
